BHRNA Bargaining Update #9: September 26, 2025

On Wednesday, September 24, our BHRNA bargaining team met virtually with Adventist Health from UNAC/UHCP headquarters. We focused heavily on economics and made it clear that management must step up to meet the needs of our members and our patients.

But let’s be honest: management won’t move unless we push them together. This fight is not won at the table alone—it’s won through solidarity, unity, and collective action.

📅 Upcoming Bargaining Dates

  • September 29 – Massive turnout needed! We will be meeting in person at the Courtyard Marriott  in Monterey Park. We need you alongside us to send a strong message to Adventist Health that we’re united across hospitals and classifications. Our UNAC/UHCP siblings from Kaiser will be there in solidarity.

  • October 7 & 8 – Bargaining will happen virtually. Location is TBD.

👥 How You Can Support:

  • Wear your UNAC/UHCP swag at work to demonstrate unity — especially on Thursdays for our official swag day

  • Join our weekly Zoom calls every Thursday at 8:30 PM starting September 25 for updates and Q&A until we win our contract. Join at unacuhcp.org/BHRNA

💪 Why It Matters

Think of this like football: the bargaining team can move the ball down the field, but we only score if the entire team shows up and performs together. Right now, that means every member needs to get in the game.

This is our moment to show Adventist Health that we are one team, one union, and we will not back down. When we stand together, we win together.

BHRNA Bargaining Update #8: September 19, 2025

While we are getting closer, more movement is needed to reach an agreement that truly reflects your hard work and dedication. We remain committed to securing a contract that delivers fair wages, strong benefits, and the respect our members deserve.

Next Bargaining Session:

  • Wednesday, September 24
  • Held virtually at UNAC/UHCP Headquarters in San Dimas
  • At 8:30 AM, your bargaining team will host a special call to discuss what’s at stake before heading to the table later that morning. Join at unacuhcp.org/BHRNA

BHRNA Bargaining Update #7: August 15, 2025

Bargaining Debrief:
Thank you to every member who joined us for the unity petition delivery. With every department represented and 83% of members signing on, we showed an incredible display of solidarity—35 members turned out, some even bringing their children to show that this fight is for our families and our future.

This is what unity looks like. This is how we win.

Following our unity petition delivery on Tuesday, our BHRNA bargaining team met on Wednesday, August 13 & Thursday, August 14 to continue bargaining for contract that respects our service.

We submitted a counterproposal on compensation aimed at streamlining differentials to support nurse retention at Adventist Health Montebello, aid recruitment, and reflect the value of the services we provide. We are now awaiting their response.

What’s Next

BHRNA Bargaining Update #5: July 19, 2025

Our BHRNA bargaining team stood in solidarity with the Parkview Hospital bargaining team as both groups continue the fight for strong contracts.

Bargaining This Week

Our BHRNA bargaining team continues to make steady progress as we negotiate with Adventist Health.

We reached a Tentative Agreement (TA) on Hours of Work and Overtime, which refines existing language and strengthens scheduling standards. Notably, the TA includes new language allowing members who work 14-hour shifts or longer to request 10 hours of rest before starting their next shift—an important win for safe and sustainable scheduling.

We also advocated for an increase in education reimbursement to support continued professional growth. Management responded to a proposal on the subject of Holidays.

We are nearing the end of the non-economic phase and are actively preparing our economic proposal, which we plan to present next week.

Stay tuned for more updates—and thank you for standing strong with your bargaining team!

BHRNA Bargaining Update #4: July 8, 2025

Bargaining This Week

Although we didn’t secure any new Tentative Agreements (TAs) in our last session, one significant issue emerged: the proposed establishment of a Float Department remains a contentious topic. Our BHRNA bargaining team remains resolute and dedicated to addressing this matter at the bargaining table.

Despite challenges in negotiations, our team met with the BHRNA Board of Directors, who expressed overwhelming support and solidarity.

Looking ahead, we’re hopeful that next week’s sessions will finally move us into economic discussions, where we will continue fighting for a contract that reflects the value of our work.

Petition Efforts Gaining Momentum

We’re proud to share that we reached majority support for our petition efforts in less than a week—a powerful show of unity from our members. This solidarity makes us strong—let’s keep the momentum going to reach 100%!

If you have not already signed the physical survey, we encourage all BHRNA members to take a moment to complete the digital unity survey. Every voice matters.

BHRNA Bargaining Update #3: June 21, 2025

Bargaining Update

This week, our BHRNA bargaining team met with Adventist Health management from Wednesday, June 18, through Friday, June 20, to continue contract negotiations.

We’re proud to share that we reached several new Tentative Agreements (TAs):

  • Preceptors – We modernized the language to better reflect the vital role preceptors play in clinical education and on-the-job support.
  • Health and Safety – We secured brand-new language addressing pandemic-related protections and won access for BHRNA members to participate in Adventist Health’s quarterly Patient Safety Champions Team meetings—ensuring our voices are included in key safety discussions.
  • Union Representation – Language was updated to reflect the current administrative titles at Adventist Health.
  • Corrective Action and Discipline – We successfully negotiated the inclusion of Just Culture principles into the article.
  • Introductory Period and Evaluations – We gained stronger protections, including a requirement for written justification when a probationary period is extended. Probationary employees will now also have the right to file grievances related to contractual violations such as pay issues, inadequate training, or improper cancellations.
  • Seniority – We clarified that seniority is based on original hire date at Beverly (when applicable), extended layoff notice from 14 to 21 days, and increased the time to respond to a recall notice from 7 to 14 days.
  • Technology – We maintained status quo language to preserve current practices.
  • Employee Status – We added language clarifying that temporary nurses are not intended to displace bargaining unit members, reinforcing protections for our jobs and roles within the unit.

We remain committed to advancing the priorities that matter most to our members. Thank you to the observers who joined us—your presence strengthens our efforts at the table.

We encourage more members to attend future sessions: hear the conversations firsthand, show your solidarity, and connect with your bargaining team—lunch is always on us!

BHRNA Bargaining Update #2: June 2, 2025

This Week in Bargaining

This week, our bargaining team met with management from Wednesday through Friday, joined each day by dedicated BHRNA member observers. Thank you to all who attended—your presence reflects the strength and unity of our team.

We had productive sessions and reached several Tentative Agreements (TAs) on the following articles:

  • Recognition and Coverage – Recognizes Adventist Health as the employer.
  • Management’s Rights – Outlines the rights and responsibilities retained by the employer to operate and manage its business.
  • Harassment – Establishes a zero-tolerance policy for harassment plus no retaliation for reporting.
  • Non-discrimination – Confirms that members are treated fairly and equitably, regardless of identity or protected status.
  • Notices – Outlines the requirements for communication between the employer and the union.
  • Savings Clause – Ensures that the contract abides by federal and state law.
  • Elimination of Casual Per Diems – Protects bargaining unit work by eliminating the use of casual per diem employees.

In addition, we presented proposals on the Introductory Period and Evaluations and Preceptors. We also presented counters and engaged in meaningful discussions on Corrective Action and Discipline, as well as working on the development of strong, equitable language on Floating. Lastly, we responded to management’s proposals on Just Culture and Just Cause.

Thank you again to our observers for your continued support. We encourage more members to attend future sessions—to listen firsthand to the conversations at the table, visibly exercise our collective strength, and connect with your bargaining team over a bite to eat.

BHRNA Bargaining Update #1: April 23, 2025

This Week in Bargaining
We officially kicked off bargaining on Tuesday, April 22, and Wednesday, April 23, marking the beginning of our journey toward securing a strong contract for UNAC/UHCP members at AH Montebello campus. A special thank you to all the observers who joined us—your visible solidarity makes a powerful impact at the table.

We were honored to be joined on Tuesday by UNAC/UHCP President Charmaine Morales and Executive Vice President Peter Sidhu, who offered their support and reinforced the importance of this campaign.

Over the two-day session, we reached six Tentative Agreements (TAs). These agreements focused on updating existing contract language to reflect the transition to a new employer and the renaming of departments—necessary steps to ensure our contract reflects the current structure and reality at AH Montebello campus.

One of the major topics raised by management was their interest in establishing a float pool. While we understand the operational considerations, this proposal raises significant questions that require thorough evaluation by your bargaining team. Your input is essential in helping us assess how this would impact patient care, staffing, and work-life balance.

Next GMM: April 29, 2025
We urge all members to attend the next General Membership Meeting (GMM) on Tuesday, April 29, 2025 at 8pm PST to share your thoughts and help shape our approach on this and other critical issues.
