Registered Nurses at Sharp HealthCare ratified their contract last night. The contract between United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals and Sharp covers 4,000 Registered Nurses at Chula Vista, Coronado, Grossmont, Mary Birch, Memorial and Mesa Vista hospitals; as well as non-hospital Sharp HealthCare nurses.
“Before this contract Sharp could and often did force Registered Nurses to work for ten hours without a meal break. We won ground breaking language that now requires Sharp to provide breaks to nurses without compromising patient care,” remarked Ken Deitz, RN, President of UNAC/UHCP.
“Our members are at the heart of patient care at Sharp hospitals,” said Christine McGovern, RN, President of the Sharp Professional Nurses Network (SPNN), a Home Health nurse who’s worked for Sharp for over 30 years. “We’re proud of our work, and proud that we’ve won a contract that reflects our commitment to quality patient care, with wages and benefits that recognize our years of experience.”
Sharp is a magnet status hospital. The RNs also won improvements in educational benefits which will help them as they move toward Bachelors and Masters degrees, helping to maintain the magnet status.
Sharp Professional Nurses Network (SPNN) and Sharp management have been at the bargaining table since early August.

The SPNN RN Bargaining Team is pleased to announce that our new contract has been approved by an overwhelming majority of 99%, after Sharp RNs turned out yesterday to vote.
Because Sharp RNs stepped up to be there for negotiations and take action in our hospitals, we won a huge victory: a real wage grid, which recognizes our experience as RNs.
At the Bargaining Table we could feel the strength of SPNN nurses standing with us. Thanks to everyone who attended bargaining and stood strong at work, and to the many RNs on the Contract Support Committee. We all won this as a team.
In Unity,
Chris McGovern, RN, Home Health Deb Saia, RN, Grossmont
Larry Winkler, RN, Memorial Lois Klepin, RN, Coronado
Sandra Powers, RN, Chula Vista Gail Berhalter, RN, Chula Vista
Elizabeth Huch, RN, Grossmont Karen Cubelo, RN, Home Health
Jan Hodgson, RN, Home Health Cate Albus, RN, Memorial
Carole DeVito, RN, Memorial Inese Redondo, RN, Mesa Vista
Julie Braatz, RN, Mesa Vista

Wondering how Sharp’s wage grid compares to other San Diego hospitals? Click here to check it out. Note: on September 22, Sharp’s wage grid proposal was only for NEW HIRES. On September 27, Sharp gave a new wage grid for ALL RNs. But that new wage grid is lower for most RNs than the original September 22 wage grid was for NEW HIRES. In other words, Sharp was prepared to pay NEW HIRES more than current RNs. Click here to check it out.

Click here to see the RN Wage Grids for several San Diego area hospitals, including Sharp’s latest proposal to the Union. Look carefully to see how Sharp compares to area hospitals.
Of critical importance: Sharp’s Wage Grid is NOT for current RNs; it is management’s proposal for NEW HIRE RNs. In addition, if you look carefully you will see that Sharp DECREASED their wage grid proposal between their first proposal on September 22 and their second proposal on September 27.
Join us at bargaining tomorrow–Friday September 30 at 12 noon to hear the RN bargaining team response.
