CA Senate Health Committee Votes in Favor of Dialysis Patient Safety Act (SB 349) at Urging of Dialysis Caregivers

The California State Senate’s Health Committee stood with dialysis caregivers by their decisive vote in favor of the Dialysis Patient Safety Act (SB 349), which would set safe caregiver-to-patient ratios in chronic dialysis clinics statewide, mandate safer transition times between patients for infection control, and require annual inspections of the facilities.

The registered nurses of Sharp Professional Nurses Network (SPNN) announced today they have ratified a new three-year contract with Sharp HealthCare which includes significant wage increases and other improvements to address the union’s concern over nurse recruitment and retention.

The registered nurses of Sharp HealthCare have reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract, after months of negotiations which saw a November 28 strike by the Sharp nurses narrowly averted by last minute negotiations.

Sharp HealthCare’s registered nurses intend to strike beginning the Monday after Thanksgiving, November 28. The strike comes in response to Sharp’s repeated violations of federal labor law and refusal to address patient care problems caused by an escalating crisis in nurse turnover.

Sharp HealthCare registered nurses voted to authorize an unfair labor practice strike to protest Sharp’s unlawful implementation of its so-called last, best and final offer and other unfair labor practices. “We are willing to do whatever it takes to protect our patients, up to and including a strike,” said Nieysha White, RN, from Sharp Mary Birch.

Our Union is aware of Sharp’s communication and vigorously disagrees with its characterization of our negotiations being at impasse. As a result of their unilateral implementation of its last contract proposal, we will begin conducting strike vote meetings on Wednesday, November 2.
