Safe Staffing Law Needs Sharper Teeth

UNAC/UHCP Nurses fought for nurse-to-patient ratios and our state’s landmark Safe Staffing Law, which have been shown to save lives. But these laws need tighter enforcement. During Nurses Week State Secretary-Treasurer Barbara Blake, RN, writing in the North County Times, called for passage of Senate Bill 1246 to save even more lives. Read it here.

Once he’s stabilized, he should be sent to intensive care, where he’ll receive close monitoring by a nurse who, by California law since 1975, can be assigned only two patients at a time.

Anyone who might ever be a patient in a California hospital can be thankful to our state’s nurses who fought for these first nurse-to-patient ratios and our landmark 2003 Safe Staffing law,

California Budget Woes May Imperil Patient Care

Governor Jerry Brown's revised budget is intended to close a nearly $16 billion deficit in the state of California. However, advocacy groups representing health care providers and patients, including UNAC/UHCP, are concerned about the impact of budget cuts on patients. An early proposed cut would have removed nurse inspector jobs from California, and cut fees used to enforce patient safety laws.

National Bargaining Tentative Agreement Reached

At 2:45AM today, UNAC/UHCP and the Coalition of Unions reached a tentative agreement with Kaiser covering 95,000 Kaiser employees across the country. While we are not yet part of the national coalition, when we ratify our final contract, we will be covered by the National Agreement. This will give us increased bargaining power in years to come.

Without the active support of thousands of our members, the contact the coalition negotiated would not have been possible. During bargaining, over 1500 UNAC/UHCP members and retirees came out to support the bargaining team. Yesterday, an overflow room had to be opened during the day just for our members. Over 30 nurses camped out until the final agreement was signed early this morning. Throughout three months of bargaining, our members’ presence was described as a “sea of blue” by other partner unions.

It is this sort of unity that is required to… Read more
