Joint Labor Management: Diabetes in the 21st Century

Description: The “Diabetes in the 21st Century Seminar” offers the content health care professionals are seeking to increase their overall knowledge and problem solving skills. Through lecture, small group discussions and case studies, attendees of this one day seminar gain the critical information needed to provide effective education and diabetes care.

This course is designed for all health care professionals including providers, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists and educators who want to:
• Get re-energized about diabetes care and education
• Enjoy a comprehensive and reality based review of “the basics and beyond” of diabetes management
• Keep abreast of the rapidly changing strategies in diabetes management
• Refine their skills and improve competencies in diabetes problem solving
• Learn practical approaches to educating patients about diabetes self-management

Objective:Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
• Describe the impact of diabetes on our communities
• Discuss prevention and management strategies
• Develop a working knowledge of the different types of diabetes
• Demonstrate compassionate and successful diabetes teaching strategies
• List diabetes management guidelines as outlined by the American Diabetes Association
• Name the significance and appropriate use of different diabetes medications
• Discuss how to use insulin therapy to gain improved glucose control
• Identify glucose patterns and state how to adjust therapy to improve blood sugar level
• Using a case study approach, list survival skill education from hospital to home
